Welcome To Guelph! September 16, 2023

 

Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people, places and values that help everyone feel welcome and that they belong in their local community, no matter where they come from. This year’s Welcoming Week takes place from September 9 to 18 and marks the 10th anniversary of what is now a global event.


ISGW is participating in Welcoming Week 2023 by hosting Welcome to Guelph!

DATE: Saturday, September 16

TIME: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

LOCATION: 104 Dawson Road, Unit 102, Guelph

Newcomers and long-time community members are invited to join us for a fun event welcoming our newest community members and showcasing the local programs and services that are available.

What to expect at this event:

  • Learn about community organizations (and their programs for newcomers) such as:
    • Children’s Reading Room
    • City of Guelph
    • Conestoga College
    • Guelph Community Health Centre
    • Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition
    • Guelph Police Service – see demonstrations of policing techniques using service dogs or drones
    • Guelph Public Library
    • St. George’s Centre for ESL
    • Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health
  • Meet members of ISGW’s board of directors
  • See performances of traditional Chinese folk dance by the Chinese Association of Guelph (“zai shui Yi Fang”,  beauty beside the water); Taiji Performances; Traditional Kids folk dance (“Kai Men hong”, Lucky Day)
  • Participate in Rhyme Capsules: Guelph’s Tale told in Story and Song: an artist residency project by James Gordon
    ** This presentation starts at 11:00am in ISGW’s community room. **
    Do you have a story that relates to your experience arriving in Guelph as a new Canadian? Join us! The goal of this project is to collect first-hand stories from Guelphites, and to facilitate turning those stories into songs and poems, with a culminating performance and recording session in the fall.
