Interpretation and Translation (TIPS)

INTERPRETATION

TIPS is an affordable, and professional way to provide effective support to community members with diverse linguistic needs who access community and business services. Using a trained language interpreter allows for precise, impartial, and confidential communication.

Our interpreters have attended parent-teacher interviews, medical appointments, health & safety information sessions in the workplace, court appointments and more.

Professional interpretation helps build cultural bridges by using the following principles: accuracy, confidentiality, impartiality, respect, maintaining boundaries, accountability, and professionalism.

Important Changes to Medical Interpretation Services

Please be advised that ONTARIO HEALTH is no longer funding IN-PERSON INTERPRETATION.

If you are an existing customer with a code, please call RIO directly at 1-844-266-3120 to set up telephone interpretation services funded by ONTARIO HEALTH. Only primary care and medical specialists are eligible. Mental health and midwifery services are no longer eligible for funded services.

The transfer payment agency role has shifted to Community Health Caring Kitchener-Waterloo (CHCKW). All services will be administered through RIO (www.riomix.ca). Contacts in your agency should have received information directly from RIO and CHCKW. Please check across your agency for who may have received codes – codes are for the agency, and the HSP who must determine who (if multiple people) gets access. If your agency has not received information or access codes, please reach out to interpretation@healthcaringkw.org. This funding is only available for healthcare/medical appointments to legacy agencies.  IF you have a code, and wish to book telephone interpretation please call RIO directly at 1-844-266-3120

If you do not know your billing code, please contact interpretation@healthcaringkw.org for assistance.

For Guelph-Wellington partners who have not previously been accessing the OH Regional Envelope for medical interpretation:

Through the new OH Multilingual and Accessibility Funding envelope, Guelph-Wellington OHT has a limited number of access codes for primary care and specialists to utilize RIO (Regional Interpretation Ontario www.riomix.ca) interpretation services for healthcare/medical appointments. These are to bridge the gap for those who were accessing services such as VOYCE or who do not yet have existing interpretation contracts. You will still need to have a budget line for medical interpretation for this fiscal year. We highly encourage you to track interpretation usage (including languages accessed) so that we can advocate for future, sustainable funding. Please reach out to Christine Platt at cplatt@cmhaww.ca, for eligibility and details.

If you cannot obtain a code due to limited funding, but wish to pay for interpretation services out of pocket, please click here: https://is-gw.ca/tips/interpretation/request-an-interpreter/ to fill the service request form. The online form must be completed to receive service.

  1. Are you fluent in English AND a second language?
  2. Have you taken a 180-hour Interpreter Training Course?
  3. Have you passed the ILSAT or CILISAT?
