Partners with Purpose Program
Partners with Purpose is a joint initiative between the women of the Guelph Police Service (GPS) and Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington designed to build connections between the Guelph Police and the diverse women who are new to our community.
This program matches a female volunteer from Guelph Police Service with a female newcomer for 1-on-1 English conversation practice over 8 weeks. It culminates with a potluck supper where all participants are able to come together to share stories and a favourite dish.
Participants in the program:
- Practise English conversation skills
- Build connections, share stories of culture and traditions
- Learn insights into city programs and resources that assist in settlement
- Learn about Guelph Police Service
The program is open to women, 18+, who are permanent residents.

Comments from the First Session
“Both sides of the partnership left feeling enriched, our community members became aware of the role of the police in our community and how that differs from their country of origin, and we also helped them with their understanding of the community and different resources available to them, most importantly we developed friendships.”
“On our side of the partnership, we got a chance to learn about the many different cultures that make up our beautifully diverse community, an understanding that we can share with our other members as well.” – Staff Sgt. Carrie Gale, co-chair of the Women’s Internal Support Network
“The Partners with Purpose program proved to be another successful activity for newcomer women and female officers to connect and to create meaningful friendships. We look forward to working with GPS again.” -Sandra Cocco, CEO of Immigrant Services – Guelph Wellington
This program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
